Enes Kanter Freedom Declares for 2027 WNBA Draft

1 hour ago 0

Enes Kanter Freedom, once a top pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, has announced his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft. Known for his criticism of LeBron James, the Chinese Communist Party, and Nike, Freedom claims his political activism has kept him out of the NBA since being waived by the Houston Rockets in 2022.

Freedom’s announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about gender and inclusion in sports. Sophie Cunningham recently took a stand to keep women’s sports female-exclusive, but many players and coaches, like Gabby Williams, show openness to transgender athletes. The WNBA, however, has not clarified its stance on maintaining fairness in the league.

In a social media post, Freedom wore a WNBA sweatshirt, the Nike logo scratched out, declaring, “If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.” Supporters like Riley Gaines praised Freedom’s move as “genius” and “perfect” while sarcastically waiting to see if any team recruits him.

Freedom stated that he has reviewed the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and declared his intention for the 2027 draft based on its guidelines. This decision compares to past situations like Lia Thomas, a swimmer who transitioned and competed on the women’s team after participating on the men’s team.

Freedom emphasizes the need for equal application of rules and values the WNBA champions, saying, “I am definitely not here to mock, make fun of, or disrespect any community or personal choices.” His declaration challenges the league to uphold its principles regarding equality and inclusion.

While some prominent WNBA figures support male participation in women’s sports, Freedom’s announcement positions him to test the league’s policy consistency. He concluded his message by noting that he and his team are ready to see these guidelines applied fairly and anticipates attending training camp.

The WNBA faces a potential crossroads, balancing its progressive stances with the integrity of women’s sports. This scenario underscores a critical examination of the league’s current policies and the responses it elicits from fans and stakeholders.
