Emotional Journey of Kaylee Goncalves’ Family Amid Legal Challenges

The parents of University of Idaho student Kaylee Goncalves have opened up about their daily struggles since losing their daughter. They discussed their feelings and experiences on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast amid convicted killer Bryan Kohberger’s attempts to withdraw his guilty plea.

Kristi and Steve Goncalves shared their emotional journey with Sean Hannity. Kristi expressed her ongoing contemplation, wondering each morning if the pain will ever ease. “Every single morning I ask myself: Will this end? Will it not be the first thing I think about when I open my eyes?” Kristi shared. Both parents now face this as their new reality.

Kaylee, alongside three University of Idaho students, was killed in November 2022. Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary, which spared him the death penalty. He has since sought to retract his plea.

Steve Goncalves described the nightly ritual of Kristi hoping for a dream visit from Kaylee, yearning for a chance to express her love and share words left unsaid. “Before she goes to bed, she’s praying that Kaylee visits her, wanting to talk and express her love,” Steve recounted.

Kohberger’s move to withdraw his plea presents another challenge for the Goncalves family. Sentenced to life in prison without parole, Kohberger argues his guilty plea resulted from manipulated counsel, with promises of better prison conditions and asserting his innocence.

Kristi Goncalves acknowledges the difficulty of facing ongoing legal battles but remains hopeful about the pursuit of justice. “God is looking out for us,” she stated, noting this challenge presents a chance for prosecutors to seek the death penalty again.
