El-Sayed’s Controversial Senate Campaign in Michigan

Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate in Michigan’s 2026 Senate race, faces backlash over his perceived leftist policies. Florida Representative Kat Cammack criticized his approach, comparing El-Sayed to a used car salesman. She warned that these policies might strain the finances of working-class families without delivering substantial benefits.

El-Sayed aims to appear more moderate as he campaigns, but he maintains connections with individuals possessing far-left views. Since launching his Senate bid in April 2025, he has distanced himself from previous positions and removed left-wing content from the internet. Despite these efforts, he continues to be scrutinized by Republicans for associating with controversial figures.

El-Sayed has made public statements clarifying that only he and his campaign spokespeople represent his campaign. Nonetheless, his campaign is linked with contentious individuals, prompting Republicans to focus on these associations. GOP nominee Mike Rogers, opposing El-Sayed, also faces scrutiny for his controversial connections, although his campaign did not comment.

Despite El-Sayed’s claims of not being a socialist and advocating for regulated capitalism, he is supported by prominent socialists. Figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Summer Lee, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have endorsed him.

“I am not technically or practically DSA,” El-Sayed told the Wall Street Journal in July.

His connections to the Democratic Socialists of America and socialist figures draw attention, as do his ties to religious leaders with controversial pasts. El-Sayed actively engages with Michigan’s Arab American and Muslim communities, sparking further debate.

El-Sayed’s campaign also includes interactions with individuals affiliated with the Nation of Islam, a group with controversial teachings. His connections to figures within this organization, despite their polarizing positions, have become a focus for Republicans aiming to challenge El-Sayed’s credibility.

As the election approaches, the debate over El-Sayed’s associations and policy stances continues. While his campaign underscores faults in Rogers’ political history, Republicans have leveraged El-Sayed’s affiliations with extremist figures to gain traction, possibly swaying some Jewish Democratic voters.
