The woman dubbed the ‘egg juror’ during Alex Murdaugh’s double-murder trial demands South Carolina officials disclose sealed records related to allegations of jury tampering. Myra Crosby, removed from the 2023 trial before deliberations, has filed a motion dated May 18 with the South Carolina Supreme Court. She seeks to lift protective orders hiding investigative files involving former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill.
The public interest and the ends of justice are best served by transparency,
the filing states.
Legal Background
Crosby, nicknamed ‘egg juror’ after asking to retrieve her eggs and purse before dismissal, became a notable figure. Her exit led to laughter in court. The motion argues records should be unsealed since prosecutors confirmed the jury-tampering investigation is complete. Rick Hubbard of the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office indicated insufficient evidence to charge Hill with jury tampering. I don’t know that I have enough based on what we have to even get an indictment,
Hubbard said.
Contesting Secrecy
The filing highlights a January 2024 protective order acknowledging the preference for public access but deeming confidentiality necessary due to ongoing investigations. Crosby’s attorney, Joseph McCullough, stated multiple Freedom of Information Act requests were submitted to relevant agencies for the full investigative file on Hill’s alleged jury influence. These requests were denied due to the protective order.
Crosby argues the need for secrecy has ended. As is now known,
the filing asserts, the underlying purposes supporting issuance of the protective order no longer exist.
Murdaugh’s Defense Team
Murdaugh’s lawyers also seek access to the sealed records for use in civil litigation against Hill. Attorney Dick Harpootlian informed Fox News Digital of a similar motion filed by Murdaugh’s defense.
Murdaugh’s team’s efforts differ from Crosby’s request. Harpootlian noted they are engaged in active litigation. It’s not the same as Myra’s, because hers is basically an FOIL request,
he clarified.
Murdaugh’s defense claims Crosby’s exit was part of a broader strategy by Hill to direct jurors toward a guilty verdict. Crosby’s removal amplified her notoriety, as her request to take her eggs gained national attention. The episode brought humor to the courtroom scene.
Fox News Digital contacted the South Carolina attorney general’s office for comment on the case.
