Dwyane Wade’s Statue Revamp Delivers More Authentic Representation

50 minutes ago 0

The statue of Dwyane Wade at the Kaseya Center has undergone significant changes after two years of public critique. Initially unveiled on October 27, 2024, the statue displayed a less-than-perfect representation of the Miami Heat icon’s famous ‘This is my house!’ pose. Complaints led the Heat to reevaluate the artwork.

Revamping the Wade Statue

After hearing feedback, the Heat engaged the original artists, Omri Amrany and Oscar Leon, to improve the statue’s likeness. The update focused solely on Wade’s head, ensuring it aligns better with the torso which had weathered over time.

The importance of Dwyane warranted making those refinements rather than accepting something we believed could be improved.

The artists emphasized their commitment to improving the piece upon seeing it in its permanent environment.

Wade’s Perspective

Dwyane Wade himself initially felt protective of the statue, considering the effort involved in its creation. However, he recognized the need for enhancement after discussions with collaborators.

The process was different this time because we could focus on one specific part instead of recreating the entire statue.

Wade appreciated the targeted approach to ensure a more accurate representation of his facial likeness and emotion.

Public Reaction and Criticism

Upon the statue’s initial unveiling, it faced substantial criticism. Hall of Fame forward Charles Barkley famously declared, “It’s a great honor, but they gotta take that thing down. If you made an ugly statue that’s what it would look like.” Wade remained resilient through the mockery, acknowledging the comedic aspects.

One thing about me is I’m in on the joke. And people lie to you if they say they don’t hear it. I hear everything.

Ultimately, Wade embraced the need for change, resulting in a more fitting representation.

Final Thoughts from Wade

With the improvements in place, Wade hopes visitors see not just a likeness of him but a part of themselves.

I hope when people see it now, they see a better likeness of me. But more than that, I hope they see themselves. Because it may be my likeness, but it will always be our house.
