This week, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully rescued a teenager stranded in the Bering Sea after nearly three days. The rescue operation was completed on Monday and announced on Wednesday. A 15-year-old boy from Alaska was found on top of an overturned fishing boat, surviving in the harsh environment. Located about four miles east of St. Lawrence Island, he was discovered in frigid waters, approximately 40 miles from Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula.

The Tragic Incident

The fishing vessel had departed Savoonga headed for St. Lawrence Island but missed its scheduled return early Sunday. Tragically, the boy was the only survivor, losing his 16-year-old brother and 39-year-old cousin who were aboard the same vessel. The teen showed signs of hypothermia and was eventually rescued by the vessel Northwest Explorer, which had coordinated with Coast Guard aircrews.

Lt. Cmdr. Jonathon Resch, the Coast Guard pilot involved, expressed relief upon finding the boy. “People don’t survive those scenarios,” he remarked. “People don’t flip boats and survive nights.” His comment highlighted the unusually fortunate survival of the teen.

Intensive Search Efforts

A combined effort from the Coast Guard, the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, the Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska State Troopers, and local authorities included deploying multiple planes and helicopters. Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the Coast Guard Arctic District, acknowledged the tragedy of losing the two mariners but thanked the collective efforts that resulted in saving a life.
