Dominic Jackson Shines in Crete-Monee Victory

Dominic Jackson, a senior at Crete-Monee, has shown his commitment to his team by taking on any role needed. When coach John Konecki calls for the ‘steamroller’ play from the sidelines, Jackson, standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 250 pounds, knows he’s about to get the ball during crucial short-yardage situations. Jackson expressed, “I enjoy helping the team by running the ball and scoring, bringing momentum to the offense and the entire team.”

On Friday night, Jackson not only ran the ball but also secured three touchdowns in a triumphant first half, leading Crete-Monee to a 44-0 win over Hillcrest. Jackson amassed 48 yards on eight carries, with touchdown runs measured at 2, 19, and 3 yards. The 19-yard scoring sprint stood out as he burst out of a cluster and charged into the end zone from the left. Konecki noted, “When we give Dom the ball, we aim for 3 yards. Any additional yards are a welcome bonus.” The team achieved a commanding 41-0 lead by halftime, with quarterback August LaBranche passing for 133 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown to Monte Calvin-Bowsky. Calvin-Bowsky’s performance included six catches for 117 yards and a 40-yard kickoff return to open the game.

On defense, Calvin-Bowsky recovered a fumble, Isaiah Jordan snagged an interception and recovered a fumbled kickoff, while Keegan Quaderer pounced on a blocked punt. Jackson began his football journey in 2018 after relocating from Indianapolis. Initially weighing 160 pounds in grade school, he entered high school between 200 and 220 pounds. Jackson stated, “Managing my weight is key. You can’t perform if you’re burdened by it. When I gain weight, I need to convert it to muscle.”

For Hillcrest, the offensive struggles continued, remaining scoreless for the season after losing 12-0 to Thornwood in their first game. Against Crete-Monee, they gained only 49 yards. Devan Watson contributed 33 yards over six carries. Jackson played a critical role in stifling Hillcrest’s offense. Teammate Jordan voiced admiration, stating, “That’s my guy, man. He’ll do anything to help the team.”

Crete-Monee anticipated challenges on offense this season following the graduation of star players Derrin Couch and Dorian Patterson, who has since moved on to New Mexico. With Jeremiah Stonewall also leaving for Grayson in Georgia, Coach Konecki shrugged and reflected, “That’s high school football. You must find ways to generate the same production annually.”

Jackson’s versatility extends beyond football. He received a fullback offer from Bemidji State, while others showed interest in him for his defensive skills. His talents carry over to wrestling, where he qualified for state, and track, where he competes in discus and shot put. Konecki emphasized, “Dominic is a three-sport athlete, which has enhanced his football skills. Multisport experiences are rare, but they’ve greatly benefited him.”
