Dodgers Facing Challenges With Ohtani’s Availability

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently texted Shohei Ohtani, informing him he wouldn’t be in Thursday’s lineup against the Cardinals. Ohtani responded with a salute emoji. Although he wants to play, Roberts emphasized that decisions won’t be based solely on his name.

Ohtani’s Health Concerns

Ohtani is managing pain in his right biceps and left knee. Roberts described an injured list stint as “unlikely,” but uncertainty still looms over his health, impacting the team’s plans. Ohtani’s performance has dipped, with just two hits in his last six games, following a .241 batting average in August.

Roberts acknowledges great players often feel they can contribute even when not at full strength. He compares handling Ohtani to situations he’s faced with Clayton Kershaw, balancing potential risks with input from training staff.

Persistent Injury Issues

Ohtani’s left knee has kept him from pitching since July 3. His throwing program stalled after treating swelling and soreness. Now, issues with his right biceps have surfaced, hindering recovery. General manager Brandon Gomes noted Ohtani’s condition feels like an “ebb-and-flow,” requiring mindful management.

Despite lingering injuries, Ohtani hasn’t missed two consecutive games all season. Gomes prefers keeping him active, emphasizing the complexities of determining whether struggles are tied to his physical state.

Future Decisions on Playing and Pitching

Roberts plans to decide on Ohtani’s playing schedule after consulting with him and the training staff. The decision about pitching again this season remains undecided but will factor in the latest developments.

Gomes stated any decision would hinge on weighing benefits against drawbacks. The team aims to avoid compromising Ohtani’s performance without sufficient information suggesting otherwise.

Recent Performances and Support

Since restarting his throwing progression, Ohtani has posted a .704 OPS over 23 games, his lowest in a month this season.

The Dodgers acquired left-hander Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline, easing pressure on Ohtani to return to pitching. Roberts appreciates this move, noting Skubal’s positive impact on the team.
