Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, announced on Monday his intention to force a vote to impeach President Trump. He cited the killing of two U.S. citizens by federal immigration officers earlier this year. Green introduced a privileged resolution on the House floor, aimed at removing Trump from office. This resolution allows lawmakers to compel a vote within two legislative days, mandating that House GOP leaders hold a vote by Wednesday.
The move places Democrats in a challenging position as they campaign to regain control of the House and Senate in the November midterms. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has been cautious regarding impeachment, focusing on issues like high living costs that concern everyday Americans. In June 2025, Jeffries and 127 other Democrats joined Republicans to block a previous impeachment attempt by Green.
This latest effort might be Green’s final action against Trump, following his primary loss to a younger Democrat demanding generational change. Green has been a vocal critic of Trump, disrupting congressional sessions and making pointed demonstrations during Trump’s addresses.
Democratic leaders are preparing potential probes into the Trump administration if they win in November. Green argues that proceedings shouldn’t be delayed, urging immediate action given what he deems as clear evidence of Trump’s unfitness for office.
The new impeachment resolution accuses Trump of posing a significant threat to democracy, referencing high crimes and misdemeanors. It points to the deaths of two American citizens during a nationwide immigration crackdown.
