Democrats’ Prospects Improve for Wisconsin Governor’s Race

55 minutes ago 0

Prediction markets have shown improved odds for Democrats to maintain control of the Wisconsin governor’s office. This shift follows moderate Democrat David Crowley’s victory in the party’s gubernatorial primary, where he defeated progressive state Representative Francesca Hong.

Crowley aims to be Wisconsin’s first Black governor and narrowly emerged victorious by positioning himself as ideal to defeat U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, endorsed by Donald Trump and winner of the Republican primary.

Crowley briefly exited the race in early July but relaunched his campaign with outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ endorsement within two weeks.

Before Tuesday’s primary, prediction markets showed higher Republican odds of flipping the governorship, as Hong seemed likely to become the nominee. Public polling indicated Hong had a significant lead over Crowley and other candidates. However, the Associated Press declared Crowley’s win early Wednesday, with Hong conceding. Post-primary, prediction markets now lean towards Democrats winning in November.

As of 8 a.m. Eastern time, Kashi has increased Democrats’ odds to 78% for holding the governor’s office, up from 39.4% on Sunday. Republicans’ odds dropped to 22% from 61.8% on Sunday. Polymarket mirrors this sentiment; as of 5:30 a.m., it shows Democrats with a 77% chance of winning come November, up from 41% the previous day. Republican odds decreased to 22%, down from 51% on Monday.

Prediction markets enable traders to exchange contracts related to political outcomes and events, creating probability estimates from real-money wagers. As traders respond to polling, fundraising, candidate updates, and political trends, prices can fluctuate. These markets reflect trader sentiment at specific moments but may not accurately forecast future outcomes.

The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball classify the Wisconsin gubernatorial race as a toss-up.

Appealing to Independents Crucial for Both Candidates

To win in November, both Crowley and Tiffany must appeal to moderate and independent voters, crucial in Wisconsin, known for close election results.

Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, emphasized unity, stating Crowley aims to gather support from Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and anyone focused on collaboration in Wisconsin.

Tiffany targeted these voters in his victory speech, stating the movement welcomes those regardless of political affiliation. He encouraged voters wanting their children to grow in opportunity to join him.

Mainstream Democrats Support Crowley’s Win

Crowley’s success followed backing from mainstream Democrats concerned about left-leaning candidates’ ability to compete against Republicans in November.

Concerns existed among establishment Democrats that Hong’s approach might not appeal to moderate and independent voters.

Jim Kessler from the centrist group Third Way highlighted voter forgiveness varies between legislative and governor’s races, reflecting structural shifts rather than biases against Hong. In governor’s races, voters focus on implications for taxes, businesses, schools, and safety.

Although Hong energized progressive voters, key national figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders did not endorse her, unlike other candidates like Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

Ocasio-Cortez explained on ABC’s This Week that her priority involved winning back Congress, securing the House, and improving Senate winning prospects.
