She emphasized her commitment to women’s sports, stating, “My entire brand has been built on protecting women’s sports. It’s not for clicks or online attention. I genuinely want women to have the opportunity to compete and succeed in their sport.”

The WNBA’s actions have drawn criticism. Gaines suggested the league needs to decide whether it wants to focus on basketball or activism. “They can either be a professional women’s basketball league or an activist organization that occasionally plays basketball,” she stated, expressing concern that the latter path is being pursued.

The situation also highlights broader societal concerns. Gaines remarked on the troubling optics of adults, including a team owner, yelling at teenagers for expressing widely held beliefs. She questioned the societal implications, “When grown adults feel emboldened to pick on teenage girls, there is something seriously wrong with society.”
