Kacey Musgraves Supports Immigrant Children’s Rights

Grammy award-winning country singer Kacey Musgraves took a stand during her ‘Middle of Nowhere’ tour’s opening night in Chicago. She asked her fans to contribute to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights as a part of her birthday wish. Musgraves praised the nonprofit for assisting children whose parents faced ‘unfair’ deportation.

The Young Center, based in Chicago, pairs volunteers with attorneys and social workers to advocate for immigrant children in custody. Their priorities include family unity, release from custody, fair proceedings, and ensuring children’s best interests.

Efforts to Support the Young Center

In 2024, the Young Center served 1,975 children from 53 countries and opened 1,388 new cases. Detention times for children rose sharply, while requests for help from detained parents quadrupled.

Musgraves extended her support by partnering with resale platform Depop to auction 20 wardrobe pieces, with all proceeds aiding the Young Center.

She also invited three mariachi-performing brothers to open her Texas shows in May after their family secured release from ICE custody. The family pursued asylum, fleeing violence in Mexico.

Federal Response and Enforcement

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated the law requires custody for individuals entering without valid entry, while immigration claims are processed. The family entered under the now-defunct CBP One appointment system.

DHS clarified their actions, asserting commitment to enforcing the rule of law, contrasting prior administration approaches.

ICE Enforcement Activity

ICE enforcement reached unprecedented levels recently, with around 51,000 immigration arrests in July. This surpassed June’s figure of approximately 43,000.

DHS acknowledged the work of ICE personnel in removing dangerous criminal aliens from the U.S.

The Chicago concert was the commencement of Musgraves’ North American arena tour, continuing through October, with Midland performing as the opening act.
