Deadly Flash Floods in Nepal Leave Hundreds Missing

Australia has expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding its 34 missing citizens in the aftermath of a natural disaster in Nepal. Foreign Minister Penny Wong noted the difficulty in accessing information due to the disaster’s scope. The Australians were part of various pilgrimage and tour groups. Australia is dispatching crisis response teams to the area.

Wong described the tragedy as ‘devastating’ in terms of both loss of life and destruction.

Meanwhile, 47 American tourists are among the missing, as reported by Sunil Sharma from Nepal’s tourism board. Although the U.S. State Department has yet to confirm these figures, it is closely monitoring the situation and has sent a disaster response adviser.

The State Department is also contributing $500,000 through Catholic Relief Services to assist affected communities.

The floods have resulted in more than 400 foreign nationals being unaccounted for, with reports of missing individuals from countries including India, Canada, Britain, Japan, and Malaysia as well.

Officials in Nepal report that the flash floods have inflicted widespread devastation, particularly along the border with China. The incident has affected a region popular with tourists and pilgrims.

A recent report highlighted verified footage showing overwhelming walls of water demolishing structures and bridges on the Nepal-Tibet border. Observers witnessed crowds unable to escape the massive surge of mud and water.

The severity of the floods at the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, linking Tibet and Nepal, was captured on surveillance video. This footage documented the obliteration of infrastructure in the Rasuwa region, transforming serene valleys into sites of chaos.

In another alarming scene, a passenger on a bus in Bidur documented the approaching deluge. The video captures the panic as people scrambled to safety, with roads and nearby structures succumbing to the floodwaters.
