Dabo Swinney, the head coach of the Clemson Tigers, expressed his concerns about the current direction of college football during a recent press conference. His comments centered on teams like LSU that are recruiting former NFL players for the upcoming 2026 season.
Swinney, known for his straightforward style, criticized these recruitment practices, stating they are “embarrassing.” He argued that while he does not fault the young athletes, he believes that the systems exploiting these situations have been flawed for some time.
“It’s kind of embarrassing,” Swinney remarked. “Honestly, it’s embarrassing that’s where we are. I don’t blame the kids, but people trying to take advantage of the system. It’s embarrassing, but we’ve been there for a while.”
Swinney emphasized his commitment to maintaining Clemson’s traditional approach, saying, “No pun intended but we’re just going to stay in our lane.” His remarks included a subtle reference to Lane Kiffin, whose team Clemson will compete against soon.
Oddly enough, Paul Finebaum, an ESPN college football analyst often known for disagreeing with Swinney, found common ground with him this time. Finebaum expressed his strong agreement, acknowledging widespread support for Swinney’s perspective among college football circles, particularly outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“I don’t think I’ve agreed with Dabo Swinney in ten years on anything. He’s 100% right, and almost everyone in college football agrees with him that does not live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” Finebaum commented on ESPN’s “Get Up.”
The anticipated matchup between Clemson and LSU is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
