Cynthia Nixon Joins New York’s Commission on Judicial Nomination

Cynthia Nixon, known for her role as an actress and progressive activist, has been appointed to New York’s Commission on Judicial Nomination. This commission plays a key role in screening candidates for the state’s Court of Appeals. The governor can only select appointees endorsed by this body.

Nixon, a democratic socialist and former 2018 gubernatorial candidate, will serve a four-year term following her appointment by Chief Judge Rowan Wilson. Her term extends until April 30, 2030. Some Republican legislators expressed criticism over placing a celebrity without a legal background on such a pivotal panel.

State Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Anthony Palumbo voiced his concerns. He described this decision as a reflection of a radical progressive shift, citing Nixon’s lack of legal credentials.

According to her biography on New York State’s website, Nixon has engaged in political activism focusing on abortion rights, public education funding, LGBTQ equality, and breast cancer awareness. Her past political efforts emphasized equality across economic, racial, and gender lines.

Best known for portraying lawyer Miranda Hobbes on HBO’s ‘Sex and the City,’ Nixon has also appeared in other productions like ‘The Gilded Age.’ Despite her well-known acting career, the commission includes mostly practicing lawyers and officials, though a law degree is not mandatory.

The commission’s role is significant in state governance. It ensures that judges on New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, are chosen from diverse, highly qualified candidates. The Constitution mandates that the Governor selects these judges only from commission-nominated individuals.

Legal expert Jonathan Turley expressed disapproval of the appointment, suggesting that it trivializes the New York legal system.

Nixon previously contested the 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary but lost to then-incumbent Andrew Cuomo. During her political campaign, she embraced the democratic socialist identity, advocating for healthcare, housing, and education as basic rights.

In recent political activities, Nixon backed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. She shared her support on social media, showcasing her continued involvement in promoting democratic socialist principles.
