Clay Holmes Set to Return

Clay Holmes is ready to rejoin the Cubs in big-league action. As one of the Cubs’ recent trade additions to their rotation, Holmes plans to exit the 60-day injured list during the upcoming weekend in Kansas City. Manager Craig Counsell confirmed Holmes will not need another rehab start, noting the 33-year-old’s preference to pitch for the Cubs rather than undertake a fourth rehab outing. Holmes has been out since mid-May due to a right fibula fracture. His third rehab outing built up to 73 pitches Sunday, indicating readiness for major league games.

Kevin Gausman is another pitcher entering the Cubs’ lineup. The former Blue Jays right-hander will start during the Royals series, aligning him for Friday, followed by Holmes on Saturday if the rotation order is maintained.

Holmes expressed enthusiasm about joining the Cubs. He praised the team’s defense, stating it’s ideal for his sinker ball style. Holmes, experienced as a high-leverage reliever, remains open to adapting his role to increase the team’s postseason prospects. He emphasized willingness to contribute to wins, whether as a starter or reliever.

“You want to do whatever you can to win a ball game,” Holmes stated. “I love being out there when big outs are needed, and whenever that is, I’m all for it.”

Tyrone Taylor Offers Flexibility Against Lefties

With switch-hitter Ian Happ struggling against left-handers, manager Counsell is adjusting the lineup for optimal performance. Happ has posted a .158 batting average against lefties this season. Tyrone Taylor, featuring a more successful .301/.311/.589 line against southpaw pitchers, provides a strategic option in these matchups.

Counsell has engaged in discussions with Happ, explaining the plan to reduce his at-bats against challenging lefties. Taylor debuted with the Cubs in left field, offering needed energy and roster flexibility. Taylor expressed a positive reception from teammates while acknowledging the learning curve and challenges of joining the team.

Counsell is mindful of the Cubs’ current streak of 17 consecutive games without rest, making lineup choices critical.

Kevin Alcántara Returns to Triple-A

Outfielder Kevin Alcántara was sent back to Triple-A Iowa after hitting his first major-league home run. Despite the excitement of his major-league achievement, Alcántara’s stay was planned to be brief due to Taylor’s addition.

Counsell remarked on the practicality of roster decisions, emphasizing the importance of deploying the best players available. He recognized Alcántara’s performance, encouraging him to control aspects he can influence as he awaits future opportunities.
