The Trump administration announced significant results from its operation targeting illegal immigration in the trucking industry. This initiative started in Florida and expanded to states like Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio.

Operation Highway Shield

The Department of Transportation (DOT) initiated ‘Operation Highway Shield’ to address issues related to illegal immigration in commercial driving. During this operation, authorities conducted 3,487 enforcement stops. They identified 766 unsafe commercial vehicles or drivers, made 51 immigration detentions, filed 47 criminal charges, and recorded 39 incarcerations. Additionally, they noted 36 violations related to English Language Proficiency and recovered stolen freight valued at approximately $1 million.

There is a strong emphasis on maintaining strict federal immigration and commercial driving regulations. Recent efforts in Florida highlighted that many truckers at weigh stations fail to meet English proficiency requirements, crucial for road safety.

Significant Safety Concerns

Federal officials stress the importance of understanding road signs at high speeds. Insufficient English skills pose a substantial risk, especially when quick decisions are required.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator, Derek Barrs, remarked on the longstanding legal English requirements, emphasizing that language comprehension is vital for road safety.

Recent collaborations between the DOT and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) follow several fatal crashes involving individuals not legally permitted to drive commercial vehicles in the U.S. Derek Barrs reiterated the life-or-death importance of responding accurately to road conditions.
