Sophie Cunningham’s advocacy for women’s sports protection has stirred significant debate across the WNBA. On Sunday, this tension was evident in Minnesota before the Indiana Fever faced the Minnesota Lynx. Advocates for women’s sports gathered peacefully outside Target Center. They wore XX-XY Athletics shirts and held signs saying ‘Pro-Women, Not Anti-Trans’ and ‘Trust the Science.’
Cunningham’s supporters organizing this rally marked the third such event backing Cunningham’s statement. She previously expressed that young female athletes should not compete against ‘biological men.’ However, the gathering met with opposition from trans activists nearby. Video footage showed these counterprotesters using megaphones, hurling slurs, and attempting to snatch XX-XY shirts from Cunningham’s supporters. A male activist displayed an offensive sign over the women’s heads.
The situation escalated as an activist engaged physically with a supporter, necessitating intervention from security. This Minnesota event mirrored previous scenes in Seattle and Portland. In Seattle, during the initial rally, two teenage girls attended a game afterward, donning XX-XY shirts and holding a sign thanking Cunningham for speaking up. Allegedly, Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton approached them, hurling curses and accusations, leaving one in tears. As a consequence, the WNBA fined the Storm and suspended Keaton from attending the next five home games.
Supporters gathered again outside Portland’s Moda Center. There, trans activists disrupted speakers, cursed at reporters, and confronted attendees. Inside, Cunningham faced relentless boos whenever she participated in the game.
Cunningham stated before the Portland game, “I’m here to play basketball, but I’m also here to be me. I’m not going to hide or dim my light just because people disagree with me.”
