Concerns Over Antisemitism in Democratic Politics

Rep. Becca Balint, a Democrat from Vermont, discussed an incident with CNN where a fellow House Democrat seemed to dismiss antisemitism by stating, “all the Jews are rich.” Her conversation with CNN was part of a broader dialogue among Jewish Democratic politicians addressing a growing sense of antisemitism that is influencing political figures like California state Sen. Scott Wiener.

Balint expressed deep concern after witnessing Wiener being heckled by anti-Israel activists due to his past support for Israel and his Jewish heritage. Despite aligning with progressive Democrats who criticize Israel’s actions in Gaza, Balint conveyed her fear of a future backlash from some of her supporters for her unwavering belief that Jews should have a homeland.

“I know at some point there will be a day of reckoning because I still believe that Jews should have a homeland,” Balint shared with CNN.

She supports a two-state solution and insists that both Israel and Palestine should exist as safe and secure nations. Her views highlight a complex stance that Balint feels may alienate her from some supporters.

Other Jewish Democrats also shared their concerns with CNN. For example, Mark Levine, the New York City comptroller, highlighted the political scrutiny surrounding Israel, explaining how discussions often pivot towards Israel regardless of the topic. He noted feelings of exclusion arising from this pattern, attributing it to underlying antisemitism.

Michigan state Rep. Noah Arbit voiced his disillusionment with the Democratic Party, citing antisemitism masked as criticism of Israel. He questioned his future affiliation with the party, doubting how Jews can remain aligned with a movement whose grassroots increasingly demonstrate hostility toward their identity and community.
