Challenges for College Football: Reflecting on Colorado and Virginia Tech
Dan Dakich believes college football is losing some excitement. Colorado, once a vibrant team with Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, and Deion Sanders, experienced a disappointing season. The team ended with a 3-9 record, including a five-game losing streak. Dakich points out concerns like Deion Sanders’ health, suggesting that interest in the team is waning.
On a brighter note, Virginia Tech started the James Franklin era with an impressive victory. They dominated VMI, winning 73-3 in a game that brought much joy to Blacksburg. Even so, Franklin expressed frustration over a penalty imposed during this triumph.
Puzzling Penalty During Virginia Tech’s Celebration
Franklin criticized a penalty for high-fiving military members from Virginia Tech’s Corps of Cadets. He called the decision “un-American,” questioning why such gestures of camaraderie draw penalties. Despite winning by a massive margin, Franklin’s grievance was reasonable. The penalty was given when running back Marcellous Hawkins Jr. celebrated his third touchdown.
Unlike the NFL’s permissive celebration policies, college football enforces strict rules. NCAA Rule 9-2 restricts excessive or prolonged celebrations. After scoring, players must hand the football to the officials immediately. Hawkins kept the ball while high-fiving cadets, likely prompting the flag.
Despite this setback, Virginia Tech excelled, gaining 619 yards and limiting VMI to 83 yards. The celebration penalty hasn’t overshadowed their achievement.
Understanding College Football Celebration Rules
Virginia Tech’s Corps of Cadets is integral to the university’s heritage, dating back to 1872. The institution is among the few that supports a cadet corps alongside civilian students.
These celebration rules reflect a larger issue in college football, where vibrant displays are restricted by stringent regulations. This debate around penalties highlights the balance between sportsmanship and festive expressions.
