Chrissy Metz recently opened up about her choice to use a GLP-1 after years of scepticism surrounding weight-loss medications. During a Monday appearance on the ‘Today’ show, the ‘This Is Us’ star, aged 45, shared her new perspective as she approached perimenopause and reflected on her family’s history with obesity.
“I was very skeptical about GLP-1s for years,” Metz expressed. “A friend provided me with detailed insights, and I began to consider the potential benefits.” After observing health complications in her father, Metz thought proactively about her own health.
“Maybe I should try and get ahead of it,” she reflected.
Since starting the medication, Metz noticed positive changes in her energy levels and overall health. She emphasized the importance of “longevity” and noted that understanding how the drug impacts everyone differently was key. Her medical team assured her it could be beneficial, though she initially felt nervous about trying it.
Metz described these choices as part of a holistic lifestyle change. “It’s not just about taking medication,” she noted. “Many view it as a quick fix, but you need to be diligent.” The introduction of strength training and exercise marked an intentional shift towards prioritizing her wellbeing.
Metz’s proactive stance is another chapter in the public discourse surrounding her weight and health. Her role as Kate Pearson on NBC’s ‘This Is Us’ highlighted struggles with body image, bringing these discussions into the spotlight.
In a 2017 interview, Metz argued that “so many people are afraid of fat people,” advocating for education and open discussions to change these perceptions. She reflected on her challenging history with food and weight, tracing back to childhood.
During a 2024 appearance on ‘The Jamie Kern Lima Show,’ Metz recounted enduring abuse from her stepfather, including being weighed in the kitchen. “I’m slowly working to heal those wounds,” she stated, acknowledging it’s a difficult process.
Metz’s public journey offers insight into navigating personal health decisions, highlighting the importance of informed choices and supportive healthcare conversations.
