The petition filing for Chicago’s upcoming municipal election on February 23 is underway. Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing significant challenges in his bid for a second term. A recent poll shows widespread disapproval of his performance among Chicago residents.
An independent survey by the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation found that 53% of 1,108 Chicagoans disapprove of Johnson’s job as mayor. Only 22% expressed approval, while 25% had no clear opinion. Among likely voters, 55% are not enthusiastic about his re-election.
Johnson’s approval rating has struggled since reaching below 30% last year. His disapproval has remained over 50%, except for a brief period earlier this year. The discontent varies by region: 64.5% disapprove on the Northwest Side, while his West Side base recorded a lower disapproval rate at 44%. Despite this, even in his supportive areas, approval remains lukewarm.
Racial factors are influential in Chicago politics. The poll highlights that only 24% of Black residents approve of Johnson’s performance, while 46.5% disapprove. Furthermore, disapproval rates among white and Hispanic residents stand at 61% and 49.5%, respectively.
The survey also explored potential challengers. Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias appears as a strong contender, with 25% support among likely voters. Johnson follows at 14%. Giannoulias’ candidacy excites 59% of likely voters. State Comptroller Susana Mendoza, who is running for mayor, has garnered 46% enthusiasm from the electorate.
Currently, 34% of likely voters remain undecided. These sentiments could evolve as the campaign intensifies. Johnson can rely on support from the Chicago Teachers Union, which could bolster his efforts to secure votes.
The official petition filing began at 9 a.m. on Monday. Mayoral candidates need at least 12,500 valid signatures to secure their place on the ballot. Filing early or late grants candidates a chance to appear first or last on the ballot through a lottery system.
