Italian basketball player Cecilia Zandalasini expressed strong discontent with FIBA officials following Italy’s narrow defeat to the U.S. in the Women’s World Cup game on Sunday. Italy lost 55-52 in a close match against the U.S., held in Berlin, Germany.
As the game neared its end, Zandalasini attempted a 3-point shot to even the score. Positioned against Jackie Young, she aimed to find an opening. During this critical moment, Zandalasini appeared to be struck in the face by Young, but the referees did not call a foul.
Unable to secure a foul, Zandalasini was forced to take a heavily contested shot, which did not go in, ending the game. After the missed shot, emotions ran high, and Zandalasini was seen expressing her anger at the referees, needing assistance from staff to calm down.
“I would like to apologize for the way I reacted,” Zandalasini later stated at the postgame press conference. “It wasn’t sportsmanship at all. I feel embarrassed and just wanted to say that out loud to whoever watches.”
Zandalasini scored 14 points and gathered seven rebounds during her 27 minutes on the court. Italy maintained pressure on the U.S. throughout the game, challenging the Americans effectively; however, the U.S. capitalized on their interior play to earn free points through draws and foul line opportunities.
On the American side, Jackie Young contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Angel Reese added eight points and three rebounds.
