Cancellation of Russia’s Navy Day Highlights Current Tensions

Russia’s annual Navy Day event did not take place for the second consecutive year. President Vladimir Putin chose to greet marines in front of an image of a vessel, which sparked online derision. Traditionally held on the last Sunday of July, this event showcases Russia’s maritime power with warships, navy parades, and aircraft flyovers along the Neva River in St. Petersburg.

This year, the planned fanfare was canceled again. Sources from the Russian Defense Ministry informed Fontanka, a St. Petersburg news outlet, that there were no orders to organize a parade this time. A Navy spokesperson mentioned, “it’s not the right time.” The Kremlin attributed last year’s cancellation to security concerns, yet these were not officially cited this year. Notably, recent Ukrainian drone strikes have targeted Russia’s second-largest city, which is usually protected by air defenses.

On July 24, the city faced an attack linked to the online retailer Wildberries. This incident produced thick clouds of smoke, affecting commercial flight operations. In lieu of the traditional celebrations, Putin addressed sailors at the Admiralty, the Navy headquarters in the city. Footage showed him greeting marines in front of a submarine image, a scene mocked on social media by pro-Ukrainian users.

Ukrainian X channel Military News UA noted, “a parade took place on Navy Day, but without the fleet itself. Instead of real ships, there were banners with their photos.”

Footage shared by Nexta on X labeled the event a global embarrassment for Putin, and revealed that a painted submarine replaced actual naval vessels. While the Kremlin removed the event details from its official websites, online users quipped about the situation referencing historical sites.

Pro-Ukrainian outlets like United 24 Media commented on the scene, emphasizing the lack of actual naval presence. Jürgen Nauditt, an X user supporting Ukraine, remarked on the Navy Day’s absence of real ships, highlighting the state of the Russian navy.

Statements from Putin

Despite the changes, Putin used the event to reiterate Russia’s stance on the Ukraine conflict. He emphasized the Navy’s importance in Russia’s military objectives and global security efforts. Additionally, he discussed protecting interests along the Northern Sea Route and securing Kaliningrad against potential threats, especially during tensions with NATO.

Recognizing the war’s costs, Putin indicated ongoing high military expenditure. He remarked on resource allocation necessary for the “special military operation,” deeming it justified.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a think tank in Washington, D.C., analyzed comments from Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev. Moiseyev discussed developing unmanned systems in the Northern Fleet to defend Russian vessels from increased Ukrainian attacks in the Black and Azov seas.
