The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported a tragic incident in Sacramento County. A California woman, Shalini Thakur, 38, was fatally shot outside a Panera Bread outlet by Rohit Rohit, an illegal immigrant from India. The DHS said Rohit had been stalking Thakur for months and was subject to a restraining order.
Thakur was near her car when Rohit approached her. As she tried to escape, he shot her in the head. After the shooting, Rohit drove away but was intercepted by police. He took his own life before officers could apprehend him.
A spokesperson from DHS commented on the tragedy, “This tragedy would have been completely avoided if it weren’t for the Biden administration releasing this killer into our country. Sanctuary politicians must put an end to reckless policies that play Russian roulette with American lives.”
Thakur had obtained a restraining order against Rohit, whom she recognized as a DoorDash driver. Reports indicate he would park outside her home for hours and engage in daily conversations. He also used an Apple AirTag to track her and tried coercing her into marriage. Rohit’s harassment included deflating her car tires and following her to work.
Authorities revealed that Rohit attempted to enter Thakur’s home and had acquired a copy of her apartment key. Despite a restraining order in May, stalking incidents persisted as late as July. Thakur’s mother, Sudesh Kumari, expressed frustration, saying, “She could have been saved. She told police so many times. She called them, but nobody did anything.”
Rohit’s illegal entry into the U.S. occurred in August 2023 through Arizona. He was detained by U.S. Border Patrol but released under the current administration’s policy, which allows migrants to enter the U.S. with a court date set for later.
This incident also draws attention to broader immigration policies and their potential risks. DoorDash did not provide immediate comments concerning the case.
