Buchmann’s Innovative Approach to Winning Bassmaster Elite Qualifier

Kaden Buchmann claimed victory in the first Bassmaster Elite Qualifier of the season at Norfork Lake, Arkansas, wrapping up the event with a total of 42 pounds, 7 ounces across three days. This win is significant, especially considering the event’s restrictions on using forward-facing sonar. Buchmann’s solution involved observing local wildlife—the deer.

Buchmann noticed that deer presence near water often indicated that areas hadn’t been disturbed by other anglers. Seeing deer was used as a sign to explore those areas for fishing. On the opening day, Buchmann identified over 30 deer, including a 9-point buck, and leveraged their presence in undisturbed pockets to secure 16 pounds, 7 ounces, taking the tournament lead.

His strategy worked consistently, as he continued to spot deer on Day 2, contributing to further successes in catching quality bass. Buchmann remarked on the importance of trusting intuition and fishing where bass might be located without sonar advantages.

Despite relying on deer spotting as part of his strategy, Buchmann emphasized diligence in other techniques. He covered vast regions of the lake, maintaining high speeds, targeting docks and shaded shorelines with a topwater bait, and skipping jigs. Four of his final-day catches came from previously unfished areas.

His comprehensive strategy led to an overall victory with a total of 42 pounds, 7 ounces, beating runner-up Cody Stahl by 1 pound, 14 ounces. This win not only earned Buchmann $71,317 but also secured an invitation to the 2027 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell.

While two Elite Qualifiers remain before final invitations are distributed, Buchmann’s deer-scouting method might influence other anglers to adopt similar wildlife observation strategies. The innovative tactic of following deer could become a new consideration for competitors.
