Brazil’s World Cup journey came to an end in the Round of 16 against Norway on Sunday. The match, tied 0-0 at halftime, saw Erling Haaland break the deadlock. At 79 minutes, the Manchester City star headed in a goal, giving Norway a 1-0 lead.
Haaland struck again at the 90-minute mark, doubling Norway’s advantage to 2-0. Although Brazil’s Neymar scored during stoppage time with a penalty, it was too late. Norway secured a 2-1 victory, ending Neymar’s and Brazil’s World Cup run.
Neymar, 34, announced his retirement from international football after the match. He first represented Brazil in 2010 at MetLife Stadium, marking his debut with a goal against the United States. In his World Cup career, Neymar played in 15 matches, scoring nine goals and assisting four times.
The 2026 tournament marked Neymar’s fourth appearance, having competed in 2014, 2018, and 2022. Brazil’s best run in this period was reaching the semifinals in 2014, with Neymar earning the Bronze Boot. They reached the quarterfinals in 2018 and 2022.
Despite Neymar’s club success with Santos, where he scored four goals and had two assists in eight starts this season, Brazil’s World Cup drought continues. They last won the trophy in 2002.
Norway, led by Haaland, looks strong moving forward. They await the victor of the Mexico-England match to determine their quarterfinal opponent on July 11.
