Boosting Aid for Small Defense Contractors

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Kelly Loeffler announced a new initiative to enhance support for small defense contractors. They have established the Smaller War Plants Commission aimed at increasing financial and expert assistance to smaller defense companies.

Reinforcing the Supply Chain

Hegseth emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. He stated that the commission reflects a historic commitment to strengthening the industrial capacity supporting the U.S. military. By backing businesses that supply the armed forces, the U.S. aims to outbuild and innovate against any adversaries. This approach seeks to transform industrial capabilities into advantages on the battlefield, deter conflicts, and maintain peace.

“Our message is clear: President Trump is ending the era of dependence on foreign supply chains and our adversaries,” Hegseth declared in a video.

Financial Support and Innovation

The commission resembles the Smaller War Plants Corporation formed in 1942 during World War II. Its purpose is to provide loans, contracts, and technical support for small businesses involved in war supply production. Loeffler highlighted that these efforts will bolster funding for supply chains, enabling expansion, innovation, and capability delivery to servicemen.

According to Loeffler, small manufacturers form 70 percent of the U.S. defense industrial base. She noted that the SBA manages nearly $500 billion in small business portfolios, reflecting its significant role in supporting these enterprises.
