Body camera footage offers a critical view of the fatal incident involving Jonah Neal, suggesting he did not pose a threat warranting deadly force by a federal crime-fighting task force member. Neal, age 25, was shot inside his home during a mental health crisis on the response of federal agents.

Incident Details

The task force member who fired was part of Homeland Security Investigations under Immigration and Customs Enforcement. These federal agents were sent to Memphis per directives from President Trump and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to address local crime.

Andre Wharton, representing Neal’s family, noted that recent footage viewed at the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office casts doubt on Neal posing any immediate threat. Wharton asserted, “It was unjustified in our opinion.” The video documented actions from another agent’s perspective, revealing that Neal’s mother expressed her son’s need for help due to a mental health crisis.

Footage Analysis

Footage shows federal agents positioned at the apartment’s entrance while Neal remained at a considerable distance. A federal agent noted Neal held a knife, not a firearm; moments after, the second agent fired. Wharton criticized the response as disproportionate and indicative of inadequate training.

Press Conference Revelations

Neal’s mother, Jessica, emphasized her son harmed no one before the shooting. “ My son did not hurt anybody,” she stated, asserting the agent’s unjust decision in the brief encounter.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office has not released the footage for public review, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation refrained from commenting, citing an ongoing investigation. Wharton advocates for transparency and urgency in the investigation for community assurance. “Citizens are wondering… are the laws gonna apply equally to them?” he queried.

Since its initiation, the Memphis Safe Task Force has been involved in five shootings, four resulting in fatalities, Neal among them. Wharton also represents other families affected by such incidents, including Tyrin Johnson’s case.

The White House cited the task force’s success with over 11,000 arrests and more than 2,000 firearms confiscations despite recent controversies. Spokesperson Lauren Bis stated, “The Task Force has driven down violent crime in a city failed by extreme Democrats soft on crime policies.”

Jessica Neal previously recounted her son’s struggle during a mental health crisis when she sought 911 assistance, fearing her son’s suicide with her handgun.
