1 day ago 0

Billy Joel’s collection of motorcycles will soon be up for auction in New York. More than 70 items from the musician’s personal collection will be available at Gooding Christie’s first auction at Retromobile New York next month. David Gooding, the founder of Gooding Christie’s, described Joel as a passionate motorcycle enthusiast who appreciates diverse types of motorcycles. The sale includes rare and unique motorcycles, including older models and bikes with sidecars.

Auction Highlights

All motorcycles are sold without reserve, meaning the highest bid will secure each item. A part of the proceeds will support the Joel Foundation, which funds nonprofit music education and public women’s health initiatives. The collection features beloved motorcycles from brands like Ducati, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Triumph, Honda, and Kawasaki.

One notable motorcycle is a 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville, gifted to Joel by Madison Square Garden in honor of his 150 sold-out shows at the venue. This bike, estimated to fetch $10,000 to $15,000, features custom paintwork that includes a keyboard motif. Additionally, a 1982 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica is estimated to sell for $15,000 to $25,000 and honors Mike Hailwood’s legendary 1978 Isle of Man victory.

A restored 1975 Ducati 750 Sport, another highlight, is estimated between $25,000 to $35,000. This bike, highlighted by the auction house for its design, adds to the significance of this collection, which will appeal to both Joel’s fans and motorcycle enthusiasts alike.

Billy Joel’s Thoughts and Health Update

The collection signifies Joel’s lifelong passion for motorcycles. In a statement, Joel mentioned that he appreciates the meticulous craftsmanship of these bikes and is now ready to let new owners enjoy them.

Billy Joel’s recent announcement of his normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) diagnosis, a condition affecting his vision, hearing, and balance, has drawn attention. He underwent surgery for this condition, which tends to occur in individuals over 65. The procedure involved placing a shunt to relieve pressure from excess cerebrospinal fluid.

Joel’s health issues have impacted his concert schedule, as some performances were canceled to manage his condition. He attributed his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle to the nerve damage that led to these complications.
