Ben Affleck Discusses Parenting Teenagers and His Relationship Journey

Ben Affleck recently opened up about the challenges of parenting teenagers, revealing how he can sometimes be the target of jokes. During his appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” the 54-year-old actor shared his experiences of striving to be a relatable and insightful father, while acknowledging he wasn’t the “cool dad” he once imagined himself to be.

Affleck gave an example from his family life, illustrating how his attempts to share wisdom based on his own experiences often turn into humorous exchanges at the dinner table. He mentioned providing relationship advice to his kids, only to be met with skepticism by his 17-year-old, who quipped about his credentials based on his relationship history.

“My kids are talking at dinner, discussing their friends, drama, and relationships. I believe I have some lived experience worth sharing,” Affleck said during the interview.

Affleck co-parents three children with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner: Violet, aged 20, Fin aged 17, and Samuel aged 14. Affleck and Garner were married for over a decade, before separating in 2015, and formalizing their divorce in 2018.

The actor’s relationship history frequently becomes fodder for his kids’ teasing. Following his marriage to Garner, Affleck has been linked to several high-profile individuals like Lindsay Shookus and Shauna Sexton, and later actress Ana de Armas. His past association with Jennifer Lopez, commencing in 2002, resurfaced when they reconnected in April 2021. Making their relationship public in July 2021, they were engaged by April 2022 and exchanged vows in July of the same year.

Jennifer Lopez reflected on their relationship in her newsletter, emphasizing the value they place on living meaningful, respectful lives and the importance of love and truth for their families.

“We live our lives in a way we can be proud of and our kids can be proud of us,” Lopez shared.

Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in August 2024, marking the end of their brief reunion.

During his conversation with Jimmy Kimmel, Affleck also disclosed that Garner was initially considered to play his love interest in his new film “Animals.” However, Garner declined the role, prompting Affleck to cast Kerry Washington instead. The movie, directed and co-written by Affleck, centers on a husband-wife team determined to pay their son’s ransom.
