Banner-Holding Couple Scales Empire State Building

1 month ago 0

Two individuals wearing masks climbed the Empire State Building on Wednesday at noon. They carried a banner that stated, “when the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” The event prompted the New York City Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit to respond.

After the banner was displayed, the pair climbed down from the antenna to a lower platform. At that point, one person removed an engagement ring from a backpack, knelt, and proposed. The couple was later detained by the authorities, with charges pending, according to NYPD officials. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. It remains uncertain how they managed to scale the building.

In response to the incident, approximately 40 police officers were stationed in front of the building, while others managed traffic in the vicinity. The entrance on Fifth Avenue, between West 33rd and 34th streets, was blocked. Crowds of pedestrians gathered around the building to witness the situation.

The Empire State Building, including its spire and antenna, reaches a height of 1,454 feet. It ranks as the fourth tallest building in New York City, the sixth in the U.S., and the 43rd tallest globally.

New York City’s Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has not yet publicly addressed the incident. Efforts to reach Mamdani’s office for comment have been unsuccessful.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
