Australian authorities have recently executed the largest cocaine seizure in the nation’s history, discovering 2.7 metric tons (3 tons) of the drug on the outskirts of Sydney. This major find was made on June 19, when police unearthed cocaine hidden in underground bunkers beneath shipping containers located on a semirural property in Londonderry, a suburb positioned in western Sydney.
The Queensland Joint Organized Crime Taskforce revealed details about the discovery, noting the containers had false floors for accessing the cocaine. The estimated street value of the haul is 816 million Australian dollars (approximately $572 million).
Two Sydney residents, aged 21 and 25, have been arrested at the site. They are facing charges for possessing a commercial quantity of illicit drugs and could potentially receive life sentences.
Historical Context and Additional Seizures
Previously, Australia’s record cocaine seizure occurred in 2024, involving 2.34 metric tons (2.58 tons) taken from a fishing boat near K’gari, off the Queensland coast.
The recent Sydney seizure involved cocaine that reportedly landed by boat at Midge Point, located in the sparsely populated Queensland tropics. Authorities believe an organized crime syndicate transported the drug across 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) by road to Sydney.
Broader Connections and Charges
Investigations also suggest this massive shipment could be linked to a previous haul of 178 kilograms (392 pounds) of cocaine found in Queensland. Six people have been charged over those earlier drug seizures, which include 142 kilograms (313 pounds) of methamphetamine.
The suspected mother ship responsible for these shipments is the MV Wealth, a Belize-flagged vessel seized by the authorities in Solomon Islands for alleged involvement in transnational organized crime.
Challenges in Drug Trafficking
Australian Federal Police Commander Stephen Jay has highlighted a growing trend where organized crime groups target Queensland’s extensive 13,000-kilometer (8,000-mile) coastline for narcotic smuggling activities. The lucrative market created by Australia’s high cocaine prices drives the trafficking efforts.
This operation underscores an ongoing battle against organized crime and drug trafficking in Australia, presenting significant challenges for law enforcement agencies dedicated to stemming the flow of illicit substances.
