Astros Face Dilemma with Carlos Correa’s Potential Position Change

Carlos Correa, once hailed as the best defensive player on the field, could be on the verge of another positional change. After being sidelined since May due to an ankle injury, Correa may rejoin the Houston Astros in the coming weeks as they strive for an American League playoff spot. If he makes a return, the 31-year-old might be seen at his third infield position this season.

Currently in Florida for rehabilitation, Correa has been practicing ground balls at second base, as reported by Brian McTaggart from MLB.com. Throughout his 12 years in Major League Baseball, Correa has mostly excelled at shortstop, even securing a Platinum Glove in 2021 before transitioning to third base last season. Notably, he has yet to play at second base in his career.

The team’s decision to maintain Isaac Paredes at third base, while considering moving Jose Altuve from second base, appears strategic. Paredes stands out as Houston’s top position player this season, boasting a 3.9 WAR and 21 home runs as of Monday. In contrast, Altuve, now 36, has become one of the least effective defensive second basemen. Correa’s defensive skills surpass those of both Paredes and Altuve at their respective positions, which means his presence on the field is invaluable.

However, transitioning Altuve to designated hitter would necessitate Yordan Alvarez taking on duties in left field. This change poses the risk of increased physical strain on Alvarez, who is not known for agility in the outfield.

Before solidifying their postseason lineup, the Astros must first secure their playoff berth. Competition is fierce, especially with the Texas Rangers as they vie for the AL West title. There is no room for trial and error at this stage. Decisions regarding Correa’s role need to deliver immediate results. Should the team’s strategy falter, Correa might find himself watching the playoffs from home instead of playing in them.
