Arrests Over Kempton Park Killings in South Africa

South African police have arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of one of nine women recently found dead in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg. The discovery of these bodies over two months has raised concerns about the potential presence of a serial killer. Authorities are investigating this possibility.

The recent arrests include a man and two women linked to the death of Jabulile Ntimba. Her body was discovered on September 17, marking her as the ninth victim. As in most cases, her body was found partially clothed by the roadside.

“There does appear to be an indication that her murder may have stemmed from a relationship-related matter, including what has been described as a possible love triangle,”

said Deputy Police Chief Tebello Mosikili.

Gender-based violence remains pervasive in South Africa despite government efforts over the years. The South African Police Service has issued a warning for women to exercise caution when in the area.

President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed to ensure accountability for the killings.

“We will be pulling out all stops to find these perpetrators,”

he assured, promising increased resources to combat violence against women.

These recent arrests total four people detained in connection with the Kempton Park murders.

“While the investigation must establish whether these cases are linked, the possibility that a perpetrator or perpetrators may be targeting women demands our urgent and determined attention,”

said Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia.

A multidisciplinary team is examining potential links between the cases to identify and prosecute those responsible. Additionally, another woman’s body was found in Soweto, south of Johannesburg, wrapped in a duvet and discarded near a dam. Meanwhile, two suspected serial rapists are due in court in KwaZulu-Natal. A 46-year-old has DNA links to 16 rape cases in Durban, and a 36-year-old is connected to 14 cases across two provinces.

South Africa reports a high murder rate, averaging 60 murders per day. Statistics from April to July show 5,427 murders, averaging 45 daily. Femicide rates in South Africa are among the highest globally.

In response to the crisis, the Commission for Gender Equality has called for immediate preventive measures, including a safety audit of affected areas. This audit should assess lighting, surveillance, transport routes, neglected spaces, police visibility, and emergency response access.

“Women should not have to be killed before an area receives heightened attention,”

said Commission spokesperson Javu Baloyi.
