Amateur Archaeologist Uncovers Largest Roman Coin Treasure in Germany

An amateur archaeologist in Germany discovered a remarkable hoard of Roman silver coins, showcasing the largest such find associated with the Roman Empire’s presence in the region. The discovery occurred after Oliver Riedl’s metal detector kept signaling the presence of metal in a field near Wesseling, south of Cologne. Initiating thorough excavation by experts, the search yielded 934 Roman silver denarii, weighing a total of 3.1 kilograms (6.8 pounds). The coins, representing an era from around A.D. 69–96 up to 148 B.C., are currently on display at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn.

The LVR Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments suggested the hoard was intentionally buried in the second quarter of the second century A.D. Speculation arises about the reasons for this concealment, considering banks were absent during that period. Erich Classen, the state archaeologist, expressed the likelihood of the owner failing to retrieve them due to unexpected circumstances.

While treasures from the Roman era abound throughout Europe, finds like Wesseling’s are rare due to their extensive size. The historical value and context of these coins shed light on Roman legionary pay scales, providing insight into their economic environment. Rahel Otte, a research associate, explained the significance of the Wesseling hoard, equating its value to approximately six years of disposable income for a Roman soldier.

The area around Cologne was under Roman control from 39 B.C. to A.D. 459, evolving from a military outpost to Colonia Agrippina, now known as Cologne. The presence of Roman coins, including those from 148 B.C., reflects this era’s historical depth and the expansive influence of Rome.

Across Europe, similar findings have offered glimpses into Roman history, like those in Wales, central England, Poland, and the Mediterranean Sea. Various metal detectorists continue to contribute to uncovering and preserving these ancient treasures.
