A report by Politico unveiled serious allegations against Graham Platner, Maine Democratic Senate candidate. A woman, Jenny Racicot, claimed Platner forced her into non-consensual sex in 2021 while he was under the influence of alcohol. Following these allegations, significant supporters have withdrawn their endorsements, creating turmoil in a key race for the Democratic Party.
Platner has denied these allegations. In a social media video, he expressed the need to reflect on the campaign’s direction given the impact of the report. Platner stated, “Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically false.” However, he mentioned assessing political realities as the party faces pressure.
Jenny Racicot recounted that Platner entered her home and assaulted her. Although they had a sporadic relationship, Racicot decided to sever ties after the incident. Politico reported she did not respond to requests for further comments. Platner’s campaign also remained unresponsive to inquiries from The Associated Press.
Rep. Ro Khanna emphasized zero tolerance for such actions stating, “Sexual assault or violence against women is a red line.” He and others, including Sen. Ruben Gallego and the group End Citizens United, have withdrawn their support.
Platner previously enjoyed support after winning the Democratic primary decisively. His campaign has been affected by his controversial past, including a tattoo linked to Nazi symbolism and contentious social media statements. His primary win initially garnered some reluctant Democratic support.
Gov. Janet Mills, who exited the race earlier, had not endorsed Platner. With the possibility of Platner withdrawing, other candidates like former State Senator Troy Jackson and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows are considered potential replacements if necessary.
Renowned commentator Hasan Piker, who initially supported Platner, shifted his stance after the allegations, recognizing their seriousness during a Twitch livestream.
The withdrawal deadline for Platner is July 13, with a replacement needing to be named by July 27. As of now, Platner has canceled several campaign events.
