MINNEAPOLIS — Critical division matchups in the coming weeks will heavily influence the American League Central standings. Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable emphasized the significance on Friday, saying, “They’re crucial; they will decide it all. The focus is on managing our own division.”
The first-place White Sox started a three-game series on Friday against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. They led the division by 2½ games over the Cleveland Guardians. The Twins were 6½ games behind. White Sox starter Davis Martin noted the veterans’ influence, stating, “They emphasize the importance of taking care of daily tasks. Enjoy the game and focus on winning one game at a time.”
White Sox Contenders
Entering Friday, the White Sox held a narrow 4-3 season lead over the Twins, outscoring them 45-25. Notably, the Sox took three of four games against the Twins from May 25-28 at Rate Field, with their only loss occurring in extra innings. This included a 15-2 win featuring a grand slam by Chase Meidroth.
Meidroth’s impressive performance against the Twins includes a .345 batting average in seven games. The White Sox also faced setbacks in early June, losing two of three games against Minnesota at Target Field but bounced back with an 8-0 shutout win by starter Erick Fedde.
The Sox have five more matchups with the Twins and a remaining series against the Guardians. With a 6-4 lead over the Guardians, many games were tightly contested.
Their schedule includes a 10-game stretch against division foes, featuring series against the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. The White Sox are 6-3 against the Tigers and 7-3 against the Royals, who have been in good form. Overall, the White Sox boast a 23-13 record in AL Central matchups, a significant improvement from the previous season.
Venable remarked, “Each club in our division is strong. To succeed, handling business effectively is crucial. The players understand the importance of every game, regardless of its place on the schedule.”
Guardians’ Streak
Friday saw the Guardians on a seven-game winning streak as they faced the Royals. Their record against AL Central rivals stands at 19-17. They will close their season with a series at Kauffman Stadium with four games against the Tigers beginning on September 4.
The Guardians have achieved a strong record against the Tigers, winning seven of nine matchups. Additional challenges lie ahead with road games in Minnesota before facing the White Sox.
Twins’ Upcoming Battles
The Twins’ schedule is packed with AL Central opponents in the upcoming weeks. Following their series with the White Sox, the Twins will host the Tigers and then travel to face both the White Sox and Detroit. They wrap up their division schedule by playing the Guardians.
Despite a slightly unfavorable run differential, the Twins hold a winning record against the Guardians and slight control over the Tigers. Their current record against the AL Central sits at 19-18.
Meanwhile, the Tigers have struggled against divisional teams with a record of 13-25 and face a challenging path with several division games remaining.

Prior to Friday’s game, the White Sox reinstated designated hitter Andrew Benintendi from the bereavement list. Additionally, pitcher Tyler Schweitzer was placed on paternity leave, and pitcher Tyler Gilbert was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.
