AJ McCarron’s Coaching Journey in the UFL

Introduction to AJ McCarron

AJ McCarron, famed former Alabama quarterback, now heads the Birmingham Stallions. McCarron secured three national championships with the Crimson Tide under Nick Saban. In December, he stepped in as head coach, filling the shoes of Skip Holtz, who led the team to a 2024 championship victory.

Halftime Controversy

In Week 4, McCarron expressed strong dissatisfaction with his team during halftime against Orlando. This moment was captured in a video released by the UFL’s YouTube series, “4th & Goal.” McCarron’s intense outburst included urging his team to “wake up” and urged improvement in performance and communication. His 15-second rant was peppered with expletives, highlighting his frustration.

“Wake the f— up. Make your f—ing kicks when we got the opportunity. Stop all this f–king crying and bulls—. All y’all talk about is f–king running the ball. And then we run the ball. They don’t f—ing go anywhere. F—ing communicate. F—ing tired of it. We’re playing f—ing scared. Scared to not make a f—ing mistake. F— that.”

This display of raw emotion reflected underlying tensions in the team, despite McCarron’s storied playing history.

Challenges in Coaching

The Birmingham Stallions were historically strong, winning one UFL and two USFL championships with an impressive 33-7 record under previous coach Holtz. McCarron’s first season, however, hit turbulence; the team finished 4-6 and missed the playoffs. Their 190 points were among the least scored in the league.

Having been shut out 16-0 in the game against Orlando, McCarron’s journey as a new coach revealed the transition from player to coach is not without challenges.
