Adam Silver Discusses Caitlin Clark’s Role in WNBA Controversies

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented on debates surrounding WNBA officiating and Caitlin Clark. Silver asserted that Clark has been caught in political debates following a recent incident involving Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas.

Silver stated, “Ultimately, the issues around Caitlin Clark are not largely about officiating.” During a conversation at the Game Plan Summit with Andrew Ross Sorkin, Silver noted the dispute isn’t truly about foul calls or reviews.

Silver praised Clark’s talent and character. He emphasized her focus on improving as a player, arguing it’s unfair for her to be embroiled in political controversies. “She’s a young woman who’s trying to improve her game,” he added.

The incident involving Clark occurred on June 24 in a game between the Indiana Fever and Mercury. Thomas made contact with Clark’s throat during the match. Initially, no foul call was made, but the league later classified it as a flagrant foul and suspended Thomas for one game.

Thomas contended the contact was accidental and revealed she received threats and racial slurs post-incident. She criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for insufficient player protection.

Both Clark and Fever coach Stephanie White condemned the threats towards Thomas. Since joining the league, Clark has boosted WNBA ticket sales and TV ratings, yet discussions around her often touch on polarizing subjects like race, politics, and officiating.

Silver concluded on the need to better WNBA officiating, acknowledging existing shortcomings.
