Veteran actor, singer, and filmmaker Robert Davi has long been a vocal critic of California’s political leadership, current policies, and Hollywood’s cultural direction. Yet he never initially saw himself leaving the Golden State. Davi, known for his roles as tough guys in films like “The Goonies” and “Die Hard”, was born in Queens, New York but moved to Los Angeles in 1977. There, he embraced the California lifestyle as his on-screen career gained momentum.
Despite his deep connection to California, Davi felt compelled to leave due to several issues, including crime and homelessness. He cited political challenges in Hollywood, particularly what he perceives as a blacklist due to his support for President Donald Trump. These factors led him to sell his California home and relocate to Florida.
“The overwhelming influx of homelessness in all communities, political corruption, and the mismanagement of Los Angeles’ fires were all contributing factors,” Davi explained in an interview. He elaborated on how crime has altered daily life, mentioning that stores now require gates and guards due to rampant crime.
Davi remarked, “When I first came to LA, I could go to CVS and it was fine. I could go to a store. It was fine. Now they have gates, guards, and items behind lock and key because of rampant crime.”
A significant turning point for Davi was the home invasion and killing of Jacqueline Avant in December 2021. Avant, wife of music executive Clarence Avant, was murdered in her Beverly Hills home. This incident deeply resonated with Davi, who noted, “California was seeping into this crime, continually encroaching into communities.” Within months, Davi and his family left California for the Sunshine State.
Davi also questioned the strong left-wing shift in Hollywood and California. He recalled the political climate during Ronald Reagan’s presidential run, noting that conservatives were not afraid to express their beliefs. He played Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in the 2024 biopic “Reagan,” which highlighted the changing political landscape.
As Davi explores his new life in Florida, he reflects on the political changes in Hollywood, saying liberals and conservatives once coexisted more openly than they do now. Fox News Digital sought comment from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office.
