Paris – Naomi Osaka and Taylor Townsend have achieved notable victories on the court at the French Open, drawing attention for their actions off the tennis court. They organized a dinner for Black players before the tournament began.

Taylor Townsend noted, “It caused a bit of a stir, because we have been a minority in a sport where we stick out.” Despite some online criticism and suggestions of segregation, Townsend remained positive about most reactions to her Instagram post. She responded to criticisms by quoting rapper Finesse2tymes, highlighting perceived double standards.

Other attendees included Coco Gauff, Gael Monfils, Asia Muhammad, and Chris Eubanks. Naomi Osaka’s diverse heritage brings unique perspectives. “Growing up, there weren’t many tennis players I could look up to that looked like me,” she said. Despite isolation, her shared experiences with Black players foster fellowship and camaraderie.

“Being a minority in a sport like tennis is very isolating but the positive is that you keep tabs on everyone that…is black. There’s a fellowship, a camaraderie.”

Townsend echoed Osaka’s sentiment. For her, the dinner was more than cultural; it provided healing and a shared space to discuss their personal journeys. Despite a loss, Gauff celebrated Althea Gibson’s legacy on the 70th anniversary of her Grand Slam title, emphasizing the importance of breaking barriers in sports.

The dinner mirrors historical gatherings, such as the Harlem Renaissance events celebrating achievements among Black athletes, entertainers, and writers, maintaining familial spaces. Katrina Adams, former Black president of the U.S. Tennis Association, saw positivity in this re-emergence of tradition.

Townsend and Osaka’s friendship, strengthened by an unexpected vacation to Turks and Caicos, further demonstrates shared values in life and motherhood, beyond tennis.
