Controversial officiating isn’t confined to the NFL or NBA. The Undisputed WWE Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther on Sunday, during Clash in Italy, faced questionable decisions from referee Dan Engler.
Rhodes and Gunther’s match reached a thrilling conclusion. Rhodes, known as the “American Nightmare,” delivered a second Cross Rhodes, resulting in Gunther landing near the ropes. Rhodes went for the pin, and Engler began counting as the broadcast revealed Gunther’s foot was beneath the ropes, which should have halted the count. Engler, however, focused on counting for Rhodes and missed Gunther’s positioning. Consequently, Rhodes held Gunther’s shoulders for a three count, surprising Gunther. “The Ring General” exited the ring, signaling to Engler that his foot was under the rope.
Following the match, Rhodes celebrated his victory with fans at Inalpi Arena in Turin. Gunther, visibly upset, walked back up the entrance ramp. This marked Rhodes’ second successful title defense since defeating Drew McIntyre earlier in the month to claim the championship.
Gunther had secured this title opportunity by defeating Royce Keys two weeks prior. Initially hesitant to sign the contract for the Clash, Gunther only did so after Keys nearly took the chance from him. Gunther has consistently pointed out Rhodes’ tendency to dominate “Friday Night SmackDown.” Now, with the unsatisfactory ending, Gunther holds a valid grievance regarding his title match outcome.
The timeline for Gunther’s next title opportunity remains uncertain.
