Max Domi’s NHL Career Halts After Surgery Complications

3 weeks ago 0

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi’s NHL career is on hold following a recent surgery. On May 25, the team announced that Domi underwent a surgical procedure to resolve an issue he managed during the 2025-26 season. Although details about the surgery and its nature weren’t disclosed, the team stated that the 31-year-old faces an indefinite absence due to complications.

The announcement of Domi’s indefinite leave during the offseason raised questions as he had participated in 80 games in the previous season. Domi was seen actively playing against teams such as the Washington Capitals in Toronto on April 8, 2026.

Despite concerns about NHL ratings, the Stanley Cup Final between Vegas and Carolina remains interesting for fans. However, the specifics of Domi’s condition remain undisclosed by the Leafs.

A report from the Toronto Sun suggested that Domi underwent back surgery and experienced significant difficulties, such as being unable to walk shortly after the operation. The report notes that Domi personally chose his surgeon rather than using the one recommended by the Leafs, a decision not uncommon in professional sports.

“Whatever happened here wasn’t deemed successful. Apparently, Domi could not walk in the days following surgery, which created significant alarm,” wrote Steve Simmons. “His status remains in doubt for the coming season.”

Domi, who has been a consistent presence in the Toronto lineup since signing as a free agent in 2023, has played at least 74 games each season with the Leafs. He scored 12 goals and amassed 36 points during his 80 appearances last season. Domi has a notable history in the NHL, having achieved a career-high 72 points during the 2018-19 season with the Montreal Canadiens. The forward, originally drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Draft, hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
