The year 2026 presents a challenging landscape, as we seem to revisit outdated and harmful ideologies.
Domestic Concerns
The United States faces economic strain due to tariffs, leading to increased prices and restricted growth. The federal government’s practices echo the corruption and spoils system of the Gilded Age. Alarmingly, some young individuals on the right show interest in fascism. Remarkably, 34 percent of all young Americans view communism favorably.
Moreover, a troubling trend is the acceptance of political violence, with younger generations more willing to consider it as ‘sometimes OK’ compared to previous generations. Compounding the situation, antisemitism finds a disturbing presence on both ends of the political spectrum, as old falsehoods resurface.
International Tensions
Globally, tensions are escalating. Germany has reinforced its military to counter Russia’s threat, while Japan has increased its defense capabilities to stand against China. Conflicts persist in Europe and the Middle East, with fears of territorial aggression widespread. Russia’s ambitions target Ukraine, and China’s focus remains on Taiwan.
Surprisingly, the Trump administration is eyeing Greenland for expansion. These trends are perplexing, as they seem to revive numerous discredited ideas from the past, despite their historical consequences.
