Rescue Efforts at Pleasure Pier
Eight riders found themselves stranded near the top of a roller coaster at a Texas amusement park. The incident occurred at Galveston’s Pleasure Pier, where the Iron Shark coaster malfunctioned.
Authorities, including the Galveston Police Department and Fire Department, responded to the scene around 5:35 p.m. on Thursday. The rescue operation took over three hours, with firefighters using a ladder truck and safety harnesses to secure and remove the passengers one by one.
Details of the Incident
The roller coaster stalled during its initial climb, leaving riders suspended approximately 100 feet above the ground. Local television stations broadcast the event live, capturing the precarious situation of the passengers.
Among those trapped were students from the Houston Independent School District. They were on a field trip organized by Energized for STEM Academy Middle School and High School. Fortunately, all individuals affected by the ordeal were safely rescued.
“We are grateful that all students, staff, and chaperones are safe. School administration is in direct contact with the families of all students who were on the trip. We are thankful for the rescue efforts of the first responders and park personnel.” — HISD Statement
Park’s Response and Safety Measures
Pleasure Pier’s Chief Operations Officer, Terry Turney, confirmed the coaster’s halt was a safety precaution. “The ride experienced a malfunction at its initial ascent,” Turney explained. He assured that the ride stopped to maintain safety for all passengers.
Turney insisted that the priority shifted immediately to guest safety. The park contacted the Fire Department to aid in the safe removal of the riders.
An inspection of the ride is planned before it reopens to the public. The specifics of the malfunction remain unknown, but visitor safety remains a top concern for the park’s management.
