NHL Mourns the Loss of Stanley Cup Champion Claude Lemieux

The sports world is grieving the passing of Claude Lemieux, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, who died at the age of 60. His sudden death was unexpected, especially as he had recently participated in a ceremonial event at the Montreal Canadiens’ arena.

Just days before his death, Lemieux honored the Canadiens by carrying a ceremonial flame at the team’s home arena during their Game 3 matchup against the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final. Wearing his iconic red and blue Canadiens jersey, emblazoned with No. 32, he spread a smile as he brought the flame toward a dimly lit rink.

Tributes for Lemieux quickly emerged from all corners of the hockey community. His daughter posted a tribute on social media, expressing the deep loss she felt. “No words to express the level of devastation we feel. I love you forever daddy. Forever your only girl,” she wrote.

Brendan Lemieux, Claude’s son, also paid homage to his father. He shared a family photo online, writing, “I love you dad! My son’s favorite person is going to watch from above for a while. We will see you.” Brendan has followed in his father’s footsteps, carving out a decade-long career in the NHL, recently playing for Carolina in the 2023-24 season.

Claude Lemieux carved his name in hockey history with iconic moments. One such highlight was a pivotal goal as a rookie in 1986. During Game 7 of the second round, he sent a backhand shot past Hartford goaltender Mike Liut, forever remembered by Canadiens fans.

Lemieux, a native of Mont-Laurier in Quebec, was known on and off the ice for his strong presence. Former Canadiens center Doug Gilmour remarked on Lemieux’s influential play during the 1989 Stanley Cup Final, stating, “He was a pain in the a– to play against, but you wanted him on your team.” This summed up the polarizing yet respected reputation he held among peers.
