Federal Judge Halts Launch of Trump’s $1.8 Billion Fund

4 weeks ago 0

A judge in Virginia has issued an order temporarily blocking the Trump administration from moving money into or out of a controversial fund. This decision will remain in effect until a court hearing can take place in June.

The Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, located in Alexandria, issued the order as part of a case filed by a group claiming they have been targets of partisan attacks by the Trump administration. These individuals argue they will be excluded from accessing the fund.

The ruling issued by Judge Leonie M. Brinkema prohibits the government from creating the $1.8 billion fund or processing payments. This injunction will last until the court holds a hearing on its legality in June.

The case involves plaintiffs who allege they were victims of partisan actions by the Trump administration, and they fear being left out of any benefits from the fund. The order represents a key, albeit temporary, obstacle to compensating the president’s allies under the plan. At least two additional lawsuits challenging the fund have been filed, one in the District of Columbia and another in California. Several lawmakers, both from the Democratic and Republican parties, have publicly objected to the fund.

President Trump has positioned the fund as relief for those he claims were victims of Democratic administrations’ ‘weaponization and lawfare.’ Some of Trump’s associates, including those convicted for involvement in the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, have expressed intentions to apply for compensation.

Judge Brinkema, appointed by President Clinton, described her order as necessary to maintain the current situation and prevent any irreversible disbursement of funds until a preliminary hearing on June 12. Her order specifically prohibits transfers to the fund, review of claims submitted, and distribution of funds.
