Lionel Messi played his last match for Inter Miami CF on Sunday night before the 2026 FIFA World Cup starts next month. The game against Philadelphia Union ended with a 6-4 win for Inter Miami, but all eyes were on Messi as he left the field in the 73rd minute with a leg injury.
Despite the challenging weather, Messi managed to walk off on his own. However, he indicated discomfort and was soon substituted by Mateo Silvetti, proceeding to the locker room directly afterward.
The primary concern is whether Messi can make his sixth World Cup appearance with Argentina. His status is still undetermined, with the group stage scheduled to begin in approximately three weeks.
Before the injury, Polymarket, a prediction market, reported that Messi had more than a 95% chance of playing in the World Cup. After the incident, those chances fell by six percent and may decrease further with the injury’s assessment.
Argentina, defending its 2022 World Cup title where Messi was crucial in defeating France, will compete in Group J. Their opponents include Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
