Trump’s Approval Rating Amid Memorial Day Reflections and Upcoming Midterms

4 weeks ago 0

President Donald Trump’s approval rating is facing challenges in many states this Memorial Day. Recent polls highlight the political and geographic divide in the United States. According to Civiqs’ daily online tracking poll, based on 106,368 responses collected between January 20, 2025, and May 23, 2026, Trump’s net approval rating is negative in 36 states and positive in 14. This data underscores the erosion of his support outside Republican strongholds.

The polling coincided with the federal holiday, which honors members of the U.S. Armed Forces who died while serving.

Why Approval Ratings Matter

Trump’s approval rating is significant as this year’s midterm elections approach. Though the president is not on the ticket, these elections allow voters to express their opinion on his term in office. Historically, midterms act as a referendum on the sitting president, influencing their legislative agenda for the next two years.

The ballots in key seats across the country have the potential to shift the balance of power in the U.S. Generally, the party not holding the White House performs better during midterm elections. In 2018, Republicans lost the House. Currently, they have slender majorities in both chambers of Congress. Losing the House or Senate would affect the GOP’s ability to pass legislation and advance its policies.

Civiqs Poll Data

Trump’s approval stands at 36 percent nationally, with 59 percent disapproval, according to a rolling Civiqs poll of over 106,000 registered voters. Support is strongest in states like Wyoming (+26) and West Virginia (+16), while only 14 states show net positive approval. The remaining 36 report more disapproval than approval, highlighting a polarized landscape.

Opposition is strongest in deep blue states, with disapproval rates approaching or exceeding 70 percent in places like Hawaii, Vermont, and Maryland. Civiqs employs a large national panel and statistical modeling in collecting its data.

States With Highest and Lowest Approval Ratings

The strongest approval ratings cluster in Republican states that backed Trump in the 2024 election. In the Plains, Mountain West, and parts of Appalachia, approval numbers remain positive even as national sentiment turns negative. Wyoming leads with a net approval of 26 percentage points. North Dakota follows with a 17-point approval rating, while West Virginia scores a 16-point approval rating.

Conversely, the weakest results are in Democratic states that opposed Trump in 2024, especially on the West Coast and in the Northeast. Hawaii records the lowest net approval at -61, followed by Vermont (-57) and Maryland (-50). California and Massachusetts (-45 each) also showcase deep Democratic opposition.

Other Trump Polling Results

Civiqs’ data arrives alongside other negative polling for the president. A New York Times/Siena College poll found Trump’s disapproval rating at 59 percent. A CNN poll from May 12 reported Trump’s disapproval at 66 percent—its highest across his two terms. The CNN poll surveyed 1,507 registered voters, with a margin of error of ±2.8 percentage points.

Trump’s Memorial Day Message

Trump labeled Democrats as “Dumocrats” in his Memorial Day message. He stated on Truth Social, “Happy Memorial Day to all, including the Dumocrats, who disrespect our Military and all of the tremendous success that it has had over the last year. God Bless those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. I love you all! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

In a follow-up post, Trump added, “The Dumocrats have BAD POLICY, AND BAD CANDIDATES. Other than that, they are doing quite well! President DJT.”

White House Response

The White House has not commented on the new polling data. Earlier, spokesman Davis Ingle told Newsweek, “The ultimate poll was November 5th 2024 when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda.”
